This Case Study investigates areas around sand dams to understand sand occurrence and vegetation health, and focuses on an area covering approximately 50 km x 100 km, which includes the intersection between Kitui, Machakos and Makueni.
It uses free-to-access Copernicus Earth Observation satellite data to develop a land classification model which can then be applied to identify the general health of the riverbed and surrounding riparian zone and answer questions about the sand dam activity in the area.
